A great way to get traffic is word of mouth. People who know you take pride that they know someone who owns a website and often will consider it a very respected site of the internet and tell people they know. Depending on what type of site you have it may help out better than online advertising. Sites like Forums, membership sites, online stores, and flash games sites will do the best for offline advertising. It's the fact that they have something to offer in depend that will draw people interested. Here's a list of a few things you could do to bring in some locals to your site.

1. Tell all of your friends, relatives, and enemies. Word of mouth is much more powerful than you think. It doesn't seem like much because you can't have more than 100 people to tell, but these visitors are special because often they are repeat visitors and multiple by telling other people.

2. If you have a working printer and a lot of spare time make a good 8 by 10 sheet advertisement on your site. Make a bunch of copies of it then head outside to post it up at billboards at malls, laundry buildings, and where ever possible. Get the name out for your site. This will really come in handy if your website is about something that is not common because the next time someone is looking for information on that topic you will be the first to be thought of locally.

3. Newspaper. If you live in a small community you just may have a chance that they will give you a page to talk about "your little piece of the internet" that you are involved with. Who knows, maybe they are running short on stuff to talk about and may let your site in the newspaper. I've talked to 3 other newspaper companies around my place and seen if I could work something out and gotten a great chance to promote. It helps a lot more than you would think because I realized that they add their article online at a high PR spot with my url painted all over it. Heck don't be scared to call and ask. What are they going to do?

4. Radio Time. Of course the big stations won't let you but the tiny local one's just may let you for free. It's a very common thing actually. I once got 24 hours of DJ promotion time to Jungle music in 1998 for a site I used to run. It was a lot of fun and had great returns of traffic.

5. DO NOT spray paint graffiti with the url to your site on an old train that goes across the US or Canada . *cough*. damn this cold. Oh yeah. I don't think you should put it in marker in public washrooms, also *cough*.
