The first and easiest thing you need to do is submit your site to search engines. If you do not then there is no point to bother to run this site because you'll lose any chance of getting organic traffic. Without that you'll have to depend on only referral traffic which takes extra work to achieve. You're a webmaster so you should be tackling “ALL” ways possible to get traffic.
There are hundreds of search engines but 95% of then get their search results from google, msn search, and yahoo. Submitting to search engines is as easy as 1 2 3.
1. Find the engines to submit.
At the bottom of this page I've included a heavy amount of engines to submit to. Submitting to all of this will put you on the right track as most webmasters do only submit to google, msn, and yahoo. Engines other than google only bring a fraction of traffic towards it, but if you are submitted to say 50 others it makes a fair share of extra free organic traffic.
2. type in the url to your site. Do not type in each url of each page in a site. Only type in your main domain because search engines use spiders that will automatically list the other pages. If you do submit a bunch of within pages you may be subject to being pealized and won't be listed at all.
3. Wait for it to be listed. No one really knows when that happens. There's a waiting period which can be between 24 hours to 6 months. Most of the time its no more than a week. There are ways to fast track it, though. Building backlinks and advertising your site will make it list quicker than usual.
